Boomer Esiason Is Playing for “Team Life Insurance”

You may know Boomer Esiason as a record-setting NFL quarterback, or from his on-target commentary as analyst for The NFL Today on CBS, or maybe as co-host of Boomer and Carton on WFAN. But this September, he’ll also be playing for “Team Life Insurance” as the spokesperson for Life Insurance Awareness Month.

And there’s a good reason Boomer is so “pro” life insurance.

“Most people don’t know that I lost my mother to cancer when I was just 7. I was handed a tough life lesson at a very early age. I thought it would be good for other families to learn from what I experienced,” says Boomer.

After his mother’s death, Boomer, his father and his two teenage sisters were left to create a life for themselves. His father, Norman, worked extremely hard, but the three-hour daily commute to work in New York City left him with little free time. “That meant neighbors and relatives helped us out with things my mother would have taken care of,” he says. “If there had been life insurance, we could have hired the help my father needed to keep the household running as my mother had.”

Protection in Place

Through determination, hard work and the support of his father, Boomer was able to leverage his talent at football to gain a full scholarship to the University of Maryland. He then went on to become one of the most successful quarterbacks in NFL history during his 14-year career.

From the beginning, Boomer has protected his family with life insurance. And as his career as a radio and TV broadcaster has grown, his life insurance coverage as grown as well. “I have a beautiful family that I love—my wife, Cheryl, daughter, Sydney, and son, Gunnar—that I’ve protected with life insurance.
It’s my responsibility to make sure that if something happens to me, my family will be taken care of financially,” he says. In addition, Gunnar is fighting cystic fibrosis and will need financial support throughout his life. (You can learn more about the Boomer Esiason Foundation fighting for cystic fibrosis here.)

“Life happens at the most unexpected of times, and life insurance is about protecting the future and the people you love,” Boomer says. “Remember, if something happens and you haven’t done the planning, the people you leave behind will feel the brunt of your mistakes.”

During Life Insurance Awareness Month this September, Boomer will be talking to the American public about his story via TV and radio public service announcements to get them thinking about the need to protect their loved ones with life insurance. 1. It is good to have a celebrity endorser but it is even better to have one who has a story a lot of us can relate to, way to step up boom. Life Insurance is definitely all about protecting the future and the ones we love but I still see such low numbers of people owning it in my age (mid30’s). Would love to hear other people’s thoughts on when is the best time to buy and what has to be done to make it more attractive to to younger Americans..Thanks. Great post.

  2. Excellent read. It’s very refreshing to see some of the “big names” on campus speak out about life insurance. Too many times the subject falls on deaf ears because the person doesn’t deem the source too important. It’s great to hear Boomer putting his story out there, as well as the others who have, to try to make an impact. Knowledge is the key to making successful life insurance purchases to protect loved ones.

  3. I couldn’t agree more. It’s very hard to prepare for the worst when you’re busy hoping “the worst” isn’t going to happen. It takes tough life lessons like Boomer Esiason’s to spread awareness of how insecure many families are without a solid life insurance policy.

  4. Hello,
My name is John Stonebraker. I have written a memoir for Sam Wyche, Boomer’s coach with the Bengals. Boomer has kindly written an endorsement of the book on our behalf, and we would like permission to put his image shown here beside his endorsement on our website promoting the book.
    Thank you for your consideration,
    John Stonebraker
