Planes, Trains and Automobiles, with Life Insurance as My Ticket

Note: This is a special guest post from Laura Diss, 20, whose dad died of an aneurysm on Valentine’s Day 2005.

As it turns out, LIAM is more than just one of my favorite names, it’s the acronym for Life Insurance Awareness Month, something I’m lucky to take part in this year. With the sudden death of my father a little over a year ago, I realized just how important life insurance is, as I got first hand experience with it, or more specifically, a lack of it.

Eileen Alt Powell, in a very useful article, discusses the need to determine how much life insurance you need. She rightly says that rules of thumb like 5-10 times income etc. can be very misleading. Although she doesn't say this, I've always felt that rules of thumb are akin to the classic medical advice to "take two aspirin and call me in the morning." Maybe it's right for a headache, but wrong for a heart attack. (more…)

Since it’s Life Insurance Awareness Month, there’s something all potential insureds should be aware of—even though life insurance companies love to sell life insurance, they don’t sell it to just anybody. You have to qualify. That usually means taking a medical exam, blood tests, urinalysis and EKG, plus supplying some financial information.
