Alicia Ashmore – Beating the Odds

When Jerry Ashmore decided to enroll the employees of his concrete company in an HMO plan it was purely a business move. But only a few months after he began offering the benefits package, Jerry’s nine-year-old daughter, Alicia, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Art Post, an independent craftsman from Maryland, suffers from Crohn’s Disease, an incurable gastrointestinal digestive condition. After purchasing a new health insurance policy, Art returned home to wait the bill for his new coverage because the company preferred that no check be mailed with the application. Unfortunately, Art lapsed into a coma before he had a chance to pay the premium. With the deadline only days away, Art’s family overnighted a check and Art’s $110,000 medical bill was covered.
